Slowly, our capital is becoming green again and the first terraces are opening. Balconies are being filled with plants, the first barbecues are taking place, and Berlin is showing off its most beautiful sides...

Why not do sightrunning at the 37th Berlin Half Marathon on 2 April 2017 (bookings under Berliner Halbmarathon) or go on one of the picturesque steamboat rides? The 3.5 hour long Bridge Ride is particularly recommendable. You will not see all of the 969 bridges, but you will get a comprehensive impression of our Venice of the North.

If you are interested in curiosities, antiques, or junk: The flea market season has started! The most beautiful markets are the Berlin Art Market at Museum Island and the Flea Market at Fehrbelliner Platz... The biggest and also most touristic one is the Original Berlin Flea Market on Straße des 17. Juni.

The Gardens of the World are looking forward to the International Garden Exhibition Berlin 2017 in Marzahn-Hellersdorf. ‘From 13 April to 15 October 2017, the IGA Berlin 2017 under the motto “An OCEAN of Colors” invites you to an eventful and surprising festival of the finest international garden architecture and green urban lifestyle. On 186 days and a total of 104 hectares, more than 5,000 events focus on contemporary gardening and landscape design, natural experiences, green urban spaces and lifestyle in a variety of dimensions and shapes.’

The most important holiday for the Christians, Easter, has various cultural events in store for Berlin – such as the Festtage der Staatsoper from 7 to 16 April 2017 under the direction of Daniel Barenboim. The Staatskapelle is delighted to welcome the Wiener Philharmoniker, Anne-Sophie Mutter, and Marta Argerich as guests. In addition, the Strauss opera ‘The Woman without a Shadow’ premieres at Schillertheater on 9 April 2017, under the direction of Zubin Metha and produced by Claus Guth. Camilla Nylund will shine as the empress.

In between, you can enjoy romantic hours at the Easter fire at Britzer Garten. On 15 April 2017 from 6 p.m., the evil spirits will be traditionally chased away, and the band Country Delight will make you dance.

Two more recommendations for Deutsche Oper: the works of Benjamin Britten ‘Billy Budd’ and ‘Death in Venice’.

At Komische Oper, ‘The Fair at Sorochyntsi’ by Modest P. Mussorgski will premiere on 9 April 2017, produced by Barrie Kosky. Kosky will put together an extravagant version of the opera, which was performed for the last time at Komische Oper in 1948, and place the devil created by Gogol in present-day Berlin. Another opera, I would like to recommend, is Kosky’s version of Monteverdi’s ‘The Coronation of Poppaea,’ starting from 29 April 2017. ‘In Monteverdi's political thriller full of eroticism, murder, and intrigue, it is the amour fou of the two protagonists which threatens to endanger the balance of the political powers. The struggle of the others for pure survival will inevitably lead to a fight against the love between Nero and Poppaea’. Alright then...

Friends of non-classical music will have a wide variety of concerts to choose from in April:

Two events at Admiralspalast: 60-year-old and new mother Gianna Nanini will rock the stage with hits such as ‘Latin Lover’ and ‘I Maschi’ on 10 April 2017; followed by the Simple Minds’ acoustic live tour on 13 April 2017.

At Tempodrom, grand dame Patricia Kaas will give a concert on 4 April 2017; the beach pirates Santiano, on 7 April 2017.

Fans of Schlager music will find their party of the year at the big Schlager Festival presented by Florian Silbereisen at Mercedes-Benz Arena on 20 April 2017. Rock-classic enthusiasts sure won’t miss David Garrett at the arena on 28 April 2017.

Last but not least, the boys-turned-men band Tokio Hotel is playing at Huxleys Neue Welt on 4 April. All concerts at Eventim.

Former jungle queen Desirée Nick is playing Blandine Ebinger, the muse of Friedrich Hollaender, who was the voice of the Weimar Republic at the same time. ‘Die letzte lebende Diseuse – Blandine Reloaded‘ at Bar jeder Vernunft from 11 April 2017.

You don’t have the right thing to wear on the catwalk to the mentioned events? ‘The fashion motto “Anything Goes“ is the title of this fashion summer 2017. “The 80s are back with elements like shoulder pads, but also the style of Jackie O. from the 60s is trending,” says style advisor Maria Hans from Hamburg’ (BILD). This means you should take a closer look at the clothes you haven’t worn in a long time...

And then, go to the Echo award ceremony at Messe Berlin on 6 April 2017 and the German Filmpreis, which is the highlight of the Lola Festival, on 28 April 2017. Many stars are present in our city.

The right drink for April: ‘Berliner Mätchen’. The smell, the feeling in your mouth, and the taste... The apples grew on meadows with fruit trees, the mate tea on bushes in Brazil, and the caffeine stems from coffee beans, according to the description... a natural awakening, vegan, with 100% natural ingredients, and no added sugar. If all of this is too healthy for you, add a little bit of Siedler Gin from Bauer Schultz from Werder. Shake it on ice and enjoy the drink of Berlin summer...

I wish you delicious moments in our inspiring city in April!
