Berlin is always on the move. Big events of 2017 such as the International Green Week and the Berlin Film Festival are already over; the Barenboim-Said Akademie celebrated its opening just last Saturday. Yet in Berlin, there is no time to pause and relax. ITB Berlin 2017, the world’s leading travel trade show, is opening today: From 8 to 12 March, ITB Berlin offers interesting insights into travel destinations from all around the globe. Berlin and Brandenburg present themselves together in hall 12.

Event Highlights of the Year

One of the 2017 highlights can be found in the Berlin-Brandenburg hall at ITB: the International Garden Exhibition Berlin 2017. Starting on Holy Thursday, 13 April, the IGA turns international garden art and a green urban lifestyle into a special experience. Several architectural and horticultural highlights have been built on the IGA grounds around the new Kienbergpark and the Gardens of the World in the last few years, such as a cable car, the observation deck ‘Wolkenhain’, and the new international garden cabinets. The “OCEAN of colours” will bloom until 15 October.

The world’s largest popular sports event is coming to Berlin from 3 to 10 June. The International German Turnfest brings 70,000 participants from around the globe to the sports metropolis Berlin. In addition to 24 German Championships, workshops and a big gala with artists and gymnasts at Olympiastadion Berlin on 6 June are on the program. So, how about a short trip to Berlin on Pentecost, including sportive events?

2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. On this occasion, the German Historical Museum hosts the exhibition “The Luther Effect. Protestantism – 500 Years in the World” at Martin-Gropius-Bau. From 12 April to 5 November, the display showcases works from the time of the Reformation until today and focusses on Protestantism’s global influences. In addition, the German Protestant Kirchentag is taking place from 24 to 28 May. Services, concerts, presentations, and workshops invite guests to debate and reflect on confessions and religions.

More sports: The DFB cup final is taking place on 27 May. Still in the running are FC Bayern München, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Eintracht Frankfurt, Borussia Dortmund, and Sportfreunde Lotte. The final has been played off at Olympiastadion Berlin since 1985.

Very special races will be held in Berlin on 10 and 11 June again: The Formula E is back at Tempelhofer Feld. The electronic race cars can go as fast as 225 km/h, yet they are only 80 decibel ‘loud’.

Sightseeing done differently: The routes of Velothon Berlin on 18 June and the 44th BMW Berlin-Marathon on 24 September go past many Berlin sights such as Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, East Side Gallery, Kurfürstendamm, or Tempelhofer Feld.

More culture: The Carnival of Cultures is a Berlin institution: Since 1996, the festival and the parade have been taking place on the long Pentecost weekend around Blücherplatz in Kreuzberg. This year, the carnival is celebrated from 2 to 5 June.

Diverse Berlin: The Christopher Street Day parade on 22 July takes visitors from Kurfürstendamm to Siegessäule to Brandenburg Gate. The participants campaign for diversity and equality and against any form of discrimination. Be sure to check out the Lesbian-Gay City Festival at Nollendorfplatz, too, taking place one week earlier on 15 and 16 July.

Lollapalooza Berlin lures festival fans from all over Germany to Berlin for the third time, this year to Rennbahn Hoppegarten. The open-air on 9 and 10 September, which originally comes from the US, offers an extraordinary line-up with the Foo Fighters, Mumford & Sons, the Beatsteaks, and Cro.

Berlin’s buildings and sights shine in all new colours in autumn: The lighting festivals Berlin leuchtet (29 September to 15 October) and the Festival of Lights (6 to 15 October) present spectacular illuminations, for example, at Brandenburg Gate, TV Tower, or Berlin Cathedral.
