Musical June in Berlin

This June is clearly the musical month of the year 2018!

And the Olympiastadion Berlin has certainly been lucky as it stages many of the big concerts: Guns N’Roses will enter the stage on 3 June, the Rolling Stones, on 22 June and Jay-Z und Beyoncé, on 28 June.

Just a few hundred meters away at Waldbühne, the Berliner Philharmoniker will play their traditional summer open-air on 24 June. This year, the concert also marks the farewell of chief conductor Sir Simon Rattle. More concerts at Waldbühne: Die Toten Hosen on 7 and 8 June, the Beatsteaks on 9 June and Iron Maiden on 13 June.

In addition, Katy Perry gives a concert at Mercedes-Benz Arena on 6 June and the Fête de la Musique features open-air concerts all over Berlin on 21 June.

Another big highlight in June (and July, too) is the Soccer World Cup in Russia. The German group matches will be against Mexico (17 June, 5 p.m. German time), Sweden (23 June, 8 p.m.) and South Korea (27 June, 4 p.m.). Public screenings are available throughout Berlin, the largest one, the Fanmeile, is on Straße des 17. Juni. The group games of Germany and all games from the round of 16 to the finale will be screened there.

In addition to music and soccer, June is the month of festivals: More than 100 artists show their works at Open Air Gallery on Oberbaumbrücke on 3 June, the second Open Air Gallery 2018 will take place on 1 July. The Umweltfestival 2018 between Siegessäule and Brandenburg Gate will be held on 3 June as well. You can look forward to ecological ice cream and food as well as baby clothing, hats and handcrafts.

The Kenako Afrika Festival will be celebrated on Alexanderplatz from 7 to 17 June. Apart from concerts, discussions and talks, African food and goods can be purchased. The Torstraßen-Festival from 8 to 10 June offers music in locations at and around Torstraße; the Bergmannstraßenfest features a colorful program from 29 June to 1 July.

For fans of photography: Be sure to visit the exhibition „Irving Penn. Centennial“ at C/O Berlin, until 1 July. On the occasion of Penn’s 100th birthday, C/O Berlin features his heterogenous works from fashion shots and still lives to nude portraits and portraits of various people.

The Museum for Photography shows the exhibition „Between Art & Fashion. Photographs from the Collection of Carla Sozzani“ from 2 June to 18 November 2018. More than 200 pieces of the nearly 1,000 piece collection of Carla Sozzani will be displayed. Sozzani is the former editor-in-chief of the Italian Elle and Vogue and has her own Milan-based gallery since 1990.

Last, but not least: The 10th Berlin Biennale is just around the corner: It features contemporary art under the slogan „We Don’t Need Another Hero“ from 9 June to 9 September. Be sure to check out the diverse events, for example, at Akademie der Künste, KW Institute for Contemporary Art or HAU – Hebbel am Ufer.
