Sports fans can’t hardly wait for May…

…those not so enthusiastic about sports will be happy about the cultural variety with the Theatertreffen, Verdi days at the opera and the Carnival of Cultures. Plus: Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Pentecost.

Sports in May

Hertha BSC plays its last match of the season at Olympiastadion Berlin on 12 May at 3.30 p.m. Their opponent is RB Leipzig which is longing for a high-ranked position in order to play internationally next season. One week later, the DFB-Pokalfinale takes place in the same spot. FC Bayern Munich plans its 19th cup win while Eintracht Frankfurt reached the finale for the second year in a row and is keen on winning this time.

Anther sports event in May: The Velothon is making its way through the city on 13 May. The 60 kilometer route takes cyclists through Kreuzberg, Spandau, Wilmersdorf and other districts – on "Berlin’s fastest city tour". 100 and 160 kilometer routes are new on the program.

The ecologically-friendly little sister of Formula 1 is Formula E – back in Berlin on 19 May. The drivers will make their rounds back on the track of 2015 at former Tempelhof airport.

Culture in May

Six works by Giuseppe Verdi will be presented at Deutsche Oper from 3 to 27 May: Rigoletto, Un Ballo in Maschera, Il Trovatore, La Traviata, Don Carlos and Nabucco. In addition to the Verdi days, there is a special concert on 25 May: Angela Gheorghiu and Saimir Pirgu sing songs and arias from Otello, Simon Boccanegra and Luisa Miller.

The Berliner Theatertreffen takes place from 4 to 20 May, starting with Faust, directed by Frank Castorf at Volksbühne. This year, the Schauspielhaus Zürich, the Münchner Kammerspiele and the Burgtheater Wien take the stage among other companies.

Who does not know Wanderer above the Sea of Fog by Caspar David Friedrich? The motif of wandering in painting is the focus of the new exhibition “Wanderlust. From Caspar David Friedrich to Auguste Renoir“ at Old National Gallery from 10 May to 18 September 2018. How about a visit on 13 May, the International Museum Day?

This year, the finale of the Eurovision Song Contest is hosted by Portugal for the first time. It is held in Lisbon on 12 May and broadcast by German TV station ARD. The half-finals on 8 and 10 May can be seen on ONE or online.

Traditionally on the long Pentecost weekend: the colorful Carnival of Cultures in Kreuzberg. The street festival on and around Blücherplatz is highly popular and the parade on Pentecost, 20 May, regularly attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors.

Good weather in May? Make use of it during a boat tour with Reederei Riedel: Trips along the rivers and lakes are on the program as well as special events such as a brunch tour (20 May), a Father’s Day tour (10 May) and a Mother’s Day brunch (13 May).
