March 2017 in Berlin

Beginning of spring, the first greens and buds are showing: Berlin is becoming colourful again and diverse cultural events make the German capital of feelings spin…

At Bar jeder Vernunft, we meet Irmgard Knef with her successful programme ‘A song can be a crutch‘ from 22 to 26 March 2017. Cult star Lo Malinke (formerly known as Malediva) focusses on another topic in the world premiere of ‘Mothers & Humans‘ at the same house from 29 March to 2 April 2017.

Star conductor Simone Young is present twice at Schillertheater: in ‘Tannhäuser’ with René Pape as protagonist and in ‘Wagnergala’ on 12 March 2017 with solists of Wagner operas Waltraut Meier, Camilla Nylund, Wolfgang Koch, and René Pape.

Quite as impressive, but in another style: The Tipi am Kanzleramt will host The 12 Tenors from 18 to 26 March 2017: ’The anniversary tour of The 12 Tenors is as diverse as the tenors themselves who come from various countries: Enjoy the most popular classical arias of all times, the biggest pop hymns there are, ballads that have touched millions of people, and rock classics that will get you moving!‘ The anniversary show with its spectacular lighting effects, impressive choreographies and charming moderation is probably the biggest show in The 12 Tenors’ ten-year long career. / Photo: The 12 Tenors (c) Thomas Hesse

Friends of ballet should definitely see ’Sacre‘ by Berlin’s future ballet leader Sasha Waltz on various dates in March. Unfortunately, the decision to hire Waltz has been quite a controversy… ’Triumph in Paris: Sasha Waltz creates a new version of the Strawinsky ballet ’Sacre du printemps’ for its 100th anniversary. Energetic tensions and discharges of music as well as tricky rhythms will put you under their spell‘ (Tagesspiegel).

A solist of a special kind is definitely Lindsey Stirling: On 9 March 2017, she will play the violin at Max-Schmeling-Halle and present her album ’Brave Enough‘.

The world is visiting Berlin – at ITB Berlin, the world’s leading travel trade show at Messe Berlin from 8 to 12 March 2017. This year’s official partner country Botswana and 186 other countries from five continents will present themselves. More than 10,000 exhibitors offer top-quality information and networks. Private visitors are welcome to join the show on 11 and 12 March 2017. / Photo: ITB Berlin 2016 (c) Messe Berlin

For our environment: Berlin is taking part in the Earth Hour which turns off the lights of many Berlin sights such as Brandenburg Gate on 19 March 2017 at 8.30pm…

Watching  You – Watching Me: C/O Berlin in cooperation with the Museum of Photography focusses on the topic of supervision and photography until 2 July 2017. The exhibition curated by Stuart Alexander, Susan Meiselas, and Yukiko Yamagata shows 84 works of contemporary artists such as Edu Bayer and Josh Begley.

Half show, half sports is ‘Disney on Ice’ at Velodrom from 2 March 2017. For more than 100 years, Cinderella, Donald, and co have made big and small eyes glow. More than 100,000 visitors are expected for this tour.

Max Raabe is a Berlin original and we’re looking forward to his new programme ’That’s all I needed!’  In addition to classics like ’Kein Schwein ruft mich an’, there will be new-found original arrangements from the 20s and 30s. The music is accompanied by filmic highlights arranged by director Daniel Lwowski. At Admiralspalast from 28 February 2017.

DSDS (German Idol) juror Michelle is inviting her fans to a big gala with her greatest hits at the impressive Friedrichstadt-Palast on 15 March 2017. With a bit of luck, remaining tickets can be bought at the box office.

Few tickets are left of Sarah Connor’s concert at Mercedes-Benz Arena on 18 March 2017. She will perform her acclaimed programme ‚Mother Tongue‘ with moving songs. After the concert, you will look into the eyes of your company and think of Connor’s song ’How beautiful you are’…

I am thinking of the lyrics ’You are the first, my last, my everything’ now and look forward to ’The Barry White Experience’. Eric Conley will remember the Godfather Barry White in proper style with a large orchestra. Since 2011, the authentic show has fascinated people worldwide. Admiralspalast on 28 March 2017.

To end, a Berlin spring drink that I’ve recently re-encountered:

Two bar spoons of Helbing Kümmel (from my former home Hamburg), one cl Belsazar Vermouth (Berlin) Dry, three cl Adler Gin (Berlin), and a little bit of lemon juice… shake on ice, and the amazing spring drink ‚Berliner‘ is ready to be enjoyed.

I wish you a relaxed springtime with great feelings in our capital.

Your Hagen Hoppenstedt
